What is notarized translation and what it is required for
Notarized translation is written translation by a qualified translator and certified by a notary. The notary’s duties are in registering the translator in the book, certifying the authenticity of his/her signature and checking availability of the translator’s diploma of higher linguistic education.
Notarized translation of documents, alongside with apostille and consular legalization, is a way to make a document legally valid. Notarization of the translation of foreign documents is required it is planned to submit them, mainly, to the governmental bodies, or to whom it may concern, e.g., to the employer.
Non-residents must have notarized translation of their documents into Russian, since pursuant to article 68, p.1 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, the «official state language of the Russian Federation on all its territory is Russian». Documents in foreign languages themselves are void for their submission to Russian authorities. RF residents, in turn, must have notarized translation of their documents into the correspondent language to submit them to governmental bodies abroad.

Requirements to notarized documents
According to article 45 Part XIII of the Fundamental Principles of Legislation of the Russian Federation on the Notariat, in a number of cases the notary shall reject document notarization, in particular, provided:

any corrections, additions, crossed out words and other non-stipulated alterations;
pencil notes in the documents;
the documents, related to the deal to be certified by the notary, do not include dates in words, and the full names of legal entities without abbreviations;
pages in the documents of over one page size are not numbered, and the document itself is not bound and sealed.

Rules of document translation
In Azbuka translation agency, the translation of a document to be notarized is drawn up in the following way:

wording above the translation: Translation is from “source language” to “target language”. When the translation is made into the Russian language this inscription in Russian is sufficient;
Provided the original text has graphic symbols, they are described in the translation in words;
All proper names, including last names, addresses, company names, are transliterated into Russian;
All seals, stamps, signatures of the individuals are translated in full;
While spelling last names it is advisable to refer to the travelling passport, birth certificate. Otherwise, transliteration is made in accordance with the valid requirements (namely, transliteration requirements Federal; Migration Service of the Russian Federation);
Series and numbers of passports, form numbers, postal codes etc. are not subject to translation.
